The US sentences “El Mayo” Zambada to life imprisonment

Judge sentences founder of the Sinaloa Cartel to life and confiscates 15 billion dollars.

US Judge Brian Cogan handed down a life sentence against Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel. The sentence includes the confiscation of 15 billion dollars for drug trafficking crimes. The ruling joins a long list of Mexican drug trafficking leaders sentenced to life in prison in the United States.

Historical convictions

Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, extradited in 2017, is serving a life sentence plus 30 years in the ADX Florence maximum security prison. Juan García Ábrego, former leader of the Gulf Cartel, received 11 life sentences. Alfredo Beltrán Leyva “El Mochomo” has been serving a life sentence since 2017. Gerardo González Valencia, leader of Los Cuinis, was sentenced in 2023.

Rubén Oseguera González “El Menchito”, son of the late leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, also received a life sentence plus 30 years for drug trafficking and weapons possession.

US courts are keeping proceedings open against other extradited Mexican bosses: Rafael Caro Quintero, the brothers Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales (Z-40 and Z-42), Servando Gómez Martínez “La Tuta” and Ovidio Guzmán López.

The sentence against Zambada reinforces bilateral cooperation in the fight against organized crime, although allegations of impunity within Mexico persist.

Entangled humpback whale rescued in BCS

Humpback whale trapped in nets released in Baja California Sur.

Personnel from Profepa, the National Network for Attention to Entangled Whales and tourism service providers freed a humpback whale trapped in a nylon net in Baja California Sur.

The rescue

The environmental authority, headed by Mariana Boy Tamborrell, reported that they located the entangled marine mammal and, following safety protocols, removed most of the material. This reduced the risk of amputation, infection or impairment of mobility.

Gillnets represent a constant danger to cetaceans, especially during humpback whale season in the Gulf of California.

Threats to the species

The Action Program for the Conservation of the species indicates that entanglement, collisions with boats, acoustic disturbances, habitat degradation due to pollution and urban development are the main threats. It also mentions whale watching tourism and other forms of harassment.

In Mexico, humpback whales are found throughout the Pacific from November to May, although some remain in the Gulf of California year-round. They have an annual migratory cycle: in summer they feed in groups; In winter they hardly eat, as they dedicate themselves to childbirth, breeding and competition between males for females.

According to Conabio, these mammals are part of the 11 species of bearded cetaceans in the world and are distributed in all oceans.

Production confirms: Bellakath will not be in the reality show

The producer confirmed that the singer was considered, but no agreement was reached.

Negotiations without agreement

Although Bellakath will not be part of the new season of The House of the Famous Mexico, producer Rosa María Noguerón revealed that the singer was among the personalities considered to enter the reality show.

Negotiations with his team failed to come to fruition. “With Bellakath we have not been able to close; however, she is a personality that interests us very much. She is one of the most important singers of the urban genre. She is a very talented woman,” he declared during the press conference where details of the program were given.

Noguerón’s statements came after Bellakath published a message on her social networks that seemed to hint at her participation: “Don’t pay ViX until next year, hehehe,” wrote the “Gatita” singer.

Cast closed, but the door open

The cast for the fourth installment of the reality show has already been announced and the singer was left out. However, the production does not rule out having it in the future. “I wouldn’t want to rule out the possibility of ever having her join this project. And, well, there are many other people who want to get on the train,” said Noguerón.

For now, Bellakath will not be in the reality show, but his name continues to be heard among possible participants in future editions.
