The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that the United States government denied the extradition of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, alleged leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. The US authority argued that the accused already faces criminal proceedings in a District Court of that country.
“The United States Department of Justice notified the impossibility of addressing the extradition request made by the government of Mexico, arguing that ‘El Mayo’ is being prosecuted before a District Court of that country,” explained Ernestina Godoy, head of the FGR.
Investigations in Mexico
The prosecutor explained that the FGR maintains 32 investigations against Zambada García. Various arrest warrants and, later, the extradition request were derived from them. Godoy pointed out that the charges in Mexican territory are related to organized crime and crimes against health.
The refusal occurs after Zambada accepted the life sentence before the American justice system. His transfer to Mexico, at least for now, is ruled out. The case remains open in both countries.
