The workers’ union of the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) called the institution to a salary and contractual review whose legal deadline expires on February 2 at 7:00 in the morning; However, given the lack of progress, it requested a 30-day extension in order to continue negotiations and avoid affecting academic activities.
According to the union representation, the dialogue tables are at a standstill, without significant agreements, which is why they consider it essential to extend the deadline to build solutions that benefit both the worker base and the university.
Benjamín Marín López, laboratory assistant at the Xalapa Health Sciences Unit, pointed out that one of the main points of conflict is salary, since there are currently workers who receive income below the national minimum wage, which has been 315.04 pesos per day since last January 1.
He indicated that this situation has occurred recurrently during the last two years and, although the university has made adjustments, these are applied until the months of July or August, when they should be made automatically, as it is a constitutional right.
He added that, in addition, the institution has only leveled salaries to the general minimum wage, when due to the nature of their functions they should be adjusted to the professional minimum wage, without so far there being a satisfactory response from the university authorities.
The union representative reported that, in the absence of a proposal that meets the union’s expectations, the extension was formally requested before the labor authority, which must determine whether to authorize the extension of the legal deadline to continue with the negotiation process.
Although he acknowledged that some demonstrations have been held, he specified that these have been limited and with the aim of not affecting university work, prioritizing dialogue and the defense of labor rights.
Finally, he warned that, if a satisfactory agreement is not reached at the end of the legal period, the union does not rule out going on strike as a last resort to support its demands.
