Sheinbaum condemns death of Mexican migrant in Florida

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her rejection of the death of a compatriot who was hit by a truck while fleeing from ICE agents in Florida. During his morning conference, he assured that migration should not be treated as a crime.

“Immediately, when it happened, he informed me and they contacted the families on behalf of the consulate (…) in fact, in an ICE operation, he runs and when crossing a street he is run over,” he explained.

The Mexican Consulate has already established communication with the victim’s relatives. The case will be integrated into the diplomatic actions that the Mexican government has undertaken against immigration operations in the United States.

Sheinbaum reiterated his administration’s position: no to the criminalization of migration. “We do not agree. If there is a person who has committed a crime, then it should be prosecuted. But migration should not be criminalized, per se,” he stated.

The president also demanded that any deportation process, if appropriate under US law, be carried out with full respect for human rights. “If there is a person who for immigration reasons… must be deported, then it should be done within the framework of respect for human rights. If there is a person who committed a crime, then his process for that crime should be followed,” he indicated.

He highlighted that thousands of Mexicans have contributed for decades in the United States and deserve dignified treatment, regardless of their immigration status. “If there is a person who has been working for 30 years… there should always be respect for human rights and collaboration with the country of origin,” he added.

Regarding a possible dialogue with Donald Trump, Sheinbaum noted that he has not recently spoken with the American president, but will do so when the opportunity arises. “When we talk we will touch on this topic; I have touched on it several times: the issue of Mexicans in the United States,” he concluded.

Dog dragged by truck in Saltillo generates outrage

A video released by Dignidad Animal A.C. July 20 shows a woman dragging her dog with a truck in the Villa San Miguel subdivision, Saltillo, Coahuila.

The dog, named Rocky and a Maltese breed, was tied to the back while another dog ran behind. In a second clip, upon arriving at her home, the woman runs over the animal three times when parking and then washes the blood from the garage.

Neighbors reported the case to municipal authorities, who rescued Rocky and provided him with medical attention. After the video was broadcast, the alleged aggressor was identified as Liliana “N” and her husband Jorge “N”. On social networks, some pointed out that Liliana worked at the Saltillo Infrastructure Secretariat.

On July 21, the Municipal Government of Saltillo issued a statement distancing itself from any link with those mentioned.

“There is no relationship between the Municipal Government of Saltillo and the people identified as allegedly responsible for the incident. From the moment the video was made public showing the mistreatment of a sentient being, the Citizen Security and Protection Police Station provided human and technological resources to assist with the Attorney General’s Office of Coahuila,” the authorities stated.
The Coahuila Prosecutor’s Office investigates the case. Animal abuse is punishable in the state with sentences of up to six years in prison, according to the local Penal Code.

Three minors die when a fence collapses in Guamúchil

A perimeter fence fell on three minors who were playing near the Zopilote stream during a storm.

The Sinaloa Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death of three teenagers, ages 13, 14 and 15, which occurred during the storm that hit Guamúchil, in Salvador Alvarado. According to preliminary reports, the minors were playing near the Zopilote stream when the perimeter fence of the Renacimiento School collapsed on them.

The strong flow of the stream, increased by the rains, would have weakened the structure. Neighbors alerted the emergency services after hearing the noise. Firefighters and Civil Protection elements went to the place, located between the subdivision and the Primero de Mayo neighborhood.

The rescuers managed to recover the bodies of Cristian Adán “N”, Edwin Emiliano “N” and Jonathan Josué “N”. So far there are three versions of what happened: one suggests that they observed the water level from the top of the fence; another, that they were trying to cross the stream; and a third, who were swimming in the channel and holding on to the wall when it collapsed.

Experts and forensic experts collected testimonies and evidence in the area. The weather conditions made rescue efforts difficult. The Prosecutor’s Office continues the investigations to clarify the dynamics of the incident and determine responsibilities.

Cup 2026: economic impact was far from what was expected

Real impact of the 2026 Cup

The Center for Economic Studies of the Private Sector (CEESP) described the economic impact of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico as “reduced.” The spill initially estimated at 0.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was finally located at 0.1%.

Domestic consumption, investment in infrastructure and tourism did not register significant increases. Only employment showed a rebound: 61,000 formal jobs were created in June, after a loss of 29,922 in May.

“Apparently the expectations that were held as an economic benefit for Mexico did not materialize,” stated the CEESP.

The previous official estimate pointed to a spill of 3 billion dollars during the tournament, from June 11 to July 19. However, calculations by the Deloitte firm indicate that the figure was 2,543 million dollars, 7% lower than its own projection.

By entity, the highest benefits were concentrated in Mexico City (548 million dollars), Jalisco (290 million) and Monterrey (270 million). The gastronomic sector reported 584 million dollars, but Canirac indicated that only 3 out of 10 establishments saw profits.

The Inegi reported that private consumption in June grew just 0.1% monthly, below the 0.4% in May.

The CEESP recalled that the effect of the World Cup was seen as temporary. Private sector specialists, according to the Banco de México Expectations Survey, forecast GDP growth of 0.90% for the second quarter, 0.47% for the third and 0.55% for the last. This implies an annual advance of only 1.07%, two hundredths less than the previous forecast.
