The sky prepares its great function for 2027
NASA has just set a date for one of the astronomical spectacles of the century. We are talking about a solar eclipse that will break records for its duration.
The event is scheduled for August 2, 2027. During its peak, the totality phase will reach 6 minutes and 23 seconds. That makes it the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century.
“This phenomenon occurs when the Moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight”
Where will it look best?
The strip of totality will cross several countries. Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen will have front row seats.
The privileged place will be Luxor, in Egypt. That is where the eclipse will reach its maximum duration. It is already emerging as the epicenter of astronomical tourism for that date.
For Mexico there is bad news. NASA confirms that our country will not be within the zone of totality. Additionally, the phenomenon will occur before dawn here, making it extremely difficult to observe.
Safe observation: this is key
If you plan to travel to watch or follow the broadcasts, remember these essential recommendations:
- Use only certified lenses for solar eclipse or special grade 14 filters
- Avoid looking directly at the Sun, even for a few seconds
- Do not use ordinary sunglasses, cameras or telescopes without adequate protection
- Forget about homemade methods such as tinted glass or improvised filters
Direct exposure can cause irreversible damage to vision. The experience will be unique only if we take precautions.
Meanwhile, astronomy fans are already marking their calendars. There are three years left to prepare the special lenses and plan the journey into temporary darkness.
