The transmission that generated discomfort
Swiss public broadcaster SRF had to take a step back. A clip of bobsleigh training at Cortina 2026 was removed from its website. The reason? The commotion caused by the comments of one of its journalists during the Israeli team’s performance.
The focus was on the pilot Adam ‘AJ’ Edelman. The commentator, Stefan Renna, did something unusual. He cited and referred to the athlete’s old posts on social networks. Specifically, those where Edelman showed his support for the conflict in Gaza.
But Renna didn’t stop there. He went a step further and brought up the IOC rules. He mentioned rules requiring Russian athletes not to have publicly supported the war in Ukraine in order to compete. A comparison that raised blisters.
A debate that reaches the ice rink
The reaction was quick. Criticism rained down on the network, accusing the journalist of crossing a line. The SRF opted for withdrawal, removing the controversial content from its platform.
This opens up an old debate in sport: where does the athlete end and the citizen begin? Should personal opinions off the court weigh in sports coverage?
For many, the comment equated very different situations. For others, it was simply an analysis of the competitor’s context. The clear thing is that, once again, politics has crept onto the Olympic stage.
The Israeli bobsleigh continues its preparation in Cortina. But now he does it under the spotlight of a controversy that has nothing to do with the times on the track.
