Educational theater has a new act of resistance
Marx Arriaga Navarro, still in charge of Educational Materials at the SEP, launched a digital battle cry. He accuses that they are trying to suspend the transmission of his “Protest with a proposal”, a 24-hour marathon on networks where he defends the free textbooks that he coordinated.
“Attention! They want to lower our transmission, but… we resist,” he declared from his offices on Avenida Universidad.
The move comes just when the SEP announced that its place will have a “change of nature” starting February 15. Translation: they are taking it out. But Arriaga refuses to accept the departure and his followers make a fuss.
The committees come out to defend their legacy
The so-called Committees for the Defense of the New Mexican School do not take half measures. In a brutal statement, they accuse the current SEP of being “a prison hungry for blood” and a “neoliberal instrument.”
“We consider that the corrupt institution that the common people call SEP […] represents the great villain for the national insurgent teaching profession,” they released without anesthesia.
For these groups, the dismissal is a clear attempt to reverse the educational model that buried “obscurantist orientations of almost four decades.” They paint Arriaga as the main architect of change, the one who coordinated assemblies with “inclusion, tolerance and wisdom”—not like the old photo forums.
The serious thing, they warn, is that this hits the very heart of the New Mexican School. They say that for the first time in decades, teachers were recognized as designers of their key tool: the textbook.
Their demands are clear: either they explain the pedagogical reasons for the dismissal, or they recognize it as a political outrage. And above all, do not touch a single page of those books without first modifying the General Education Law.
Meanwhile, Arriaga continues broadcasting. Their battle is no longer just over one position—it’s over the full story of educational reform. And in this political theater, the lights are on and we are all watching.
