UNAM Acts with Firmness and Dialogue in the Face of Attempted Occupation
In an event that has marked the day at the Maximum House of Studies, the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico reported that, during the early hours of this Wednesday, a group of people attempted to take over the facilities of this prestigious school. The institution, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the order and safety of its community, acted immediately to protect its assets and ensure that essential academic activities were not affected in the long term.
From the first moment, the Faculty authorities opted for the path of respectful dialogue and open communication. This decision reflects the university’s deep commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and the prevalence of institutional channels. However, despite these efforts to find a solution within the framework of the law and mutual respect, the group’s intention to occupy the facilities persisted, forcing the application of more forceful measures.
Community Safety and Preservation Protocols
As a fundamental part of the security protocols established to protect their community and their property, those present were asked to identify themselves as active members of the Faculty community. This requirement, designed to verify the legitimacy of any individual’s presence in a university space, was rejected by the group. This refusal to prove their connection with the institution reinforced the need to maintain protection of the facilities to prevent their delivery to people possibly outside the university community.
The director Ana Carolina Sepúlveda has remained at the forefront of the situation, emphatically reiterating her commitment to legality, respect, security and permanent dialogue as the only legitimate ways to resolve any difference. His leadership underlines the adherence to the principles that distinguish UNAM and that consolidate it as an institution of excellence. The university’s rector has supported these actions, ensuring that the integrity of students, teachers and workers is the top priority.
As a direct consequence of these events and with the primary objective of safeguarding the students, the Faculty of Medicine made the decision to suspend the academic activities corresponding to the first and second years of the Bachelor of Medicine in Surgeon for this day. Likewise, it was reported that service will not be provided at windows at the Secretary of School Services. This measure, although disruptive, is temporary and preventive, allowing the gradual normalization of functions while guaranteeing a safe environment for everyone.
The institutional response to this attempted takeover reveals the complexity of university governance and the delicate balance between the right to protest and the obligation to maintain order and educational continuity. UNAM, with its vast history and tradition, has faced numerous challenges throughout its existence, and each of them has served to strengthen its structure and its commitment to the nation. The response capacity demonstrated in the Faculty of Medicine is an example of how institutions must prepare to manage potential crises, always prioritizing collective well-being and respect for established regulatory frameworks.
The university community as a whole remains attentive to the official statements, trusting that the situation will be fully resolved through dialogue and institutionality. This event will undoubtedly generate an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms for the prevention and management of conflicts within the campuses, in order to further strengthen peaceful coexistence and academic development without interruptions. Medical education in Mexico, a fundamental pillar of the health system, requires stable and safe environments to train the professionals that the country needs, and UNAM is demonstrating its determination to provide them.
