Zacatecas faces a freezing dawn with temperatures below zero
The state of Zacatecas woke up this Monday immersed in unusual cold. At least seven municipalities reported temperatures below zero, marking the start of what appears to be a week of severe weather conditions. The coldest point was recorded in Juan Aldama, in the northwest of the state, with -2°C.
According to the daily weather report from the National Water Commission (Conagua), the thermal outlook was as follows:
- Juan Aldama: -2°C
- Cañitas de Felipe Pescador: -1.9°C
- Villa Hidalgo: -1°C
- Río Grande, Miguel Auza and Atolinga: -0.4°C
- Pines: 0°C
“This Monday there are conditions for snow, sleet and freezing rain to fall in Zacatecas,” Conagua warned in its national report.
The origin of the cold front
This sudden drop in temperature is not an isolated event. It is a direct consequence of the second winter storm that affects the country, a weather system that has brought hailstorms and heavy rains. The state Civil Protection authorities have already issued alerts to the population, calling for extreme precautions.
The prognosis is not encouraging. Conagua anticipates that these icy conditions will persist for several days, with temperatures that could range between -10 and -5 degrees Celsius in the mountain areas of the state, where significant frosts are expected.
Impact and preventive measures
The cold wave coincides with a particularly delicate moment: the return to classes in basic education. In the metropolitan area of Zacatecas and Guadalupe, temperatures of 3°C with a thermal sensation of 1°C were reported during the morning.
Faced with this scenario, the recommendations are clear and urgent. Civil Protection has specifically urged parents to adequately shelter children before sending them to school. The combination of low temperatures, wind, and possible solid precipitation (snow or sleet) creates an environment that requires rigorous preventive measures to protect health, especially that of the most vulnerable groups.
This meteorological situation tests local protocols to face extreme climates and underlines the importance of heeding official warnings in a state where frost can have repercussions on both daily life and key sectors such as agriculture.
