Weather Forecast: Cold Front 14 Approaches the National Territory
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a detailed report on the weather conditions that will prevail this Wednesday, characterized by the persistence of heavy rains and a cold atmosphere in the mountain areas of the country. This meteorological pattern is developing in a transitional context, where cold front number 13 begins its weakening process, while cold front number 14 approaches northwest Mexico, with its entry predicted for Thursday night.
According to the institution’s daily forecast, very heavy precipitation is expected for today, with accumulations that could reach up to 75 millimeters, in the south of the state of Quintana Roo. In parallel, showers are expected in various regions of Veracruz, State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán. In entities such as Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla and Mexico City, the rains will occur in isolation, with rainfall accumulations of less than 5 millimeters.
Consequences and Prevention Measures for Precipitation
Higher intensity precipitation carries a significant hydrometeorological risk. SMN experts warn about the possible generation of land slides (landslides), the overflowing of rivers and streams, as well as floods in low areas of the southeastern region. Additionally, gusts of wind with speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour are forecast, a phenomenon that could cause the fall of trees and advertising structures in states such as Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and the Yucatán Peninsula.
For the coasts of Yucatán and Quintana Roo, a high wave is expected, with heights that will range between two and three meters. For this reason, the authorities have issued an emphatic recommendation to take extreme precautions in all minor navigation activities, warning the maritime population about the adverse conditions.
This rain system will be accompanied by a marked thermal drop. Extreme minimum temperatures are forecast to range between -10 and -5 degrees Celsius in the mountains of Chihuahua and Durango. Likewise, values of -5 to 0 degrees are expected in the mountainous areas of Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Veracruz. Temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees are also expected in high areas of Tamaulipas, Querétaro, Mexico City, Morelos and Oaxaca.
In this scenario of intense cold, the SMN urges citizens to adopt self-protection measures, which include dressing appropriately, avoiding sudden changes in temperature and rigorously following the instructions issued by Civil Protection and the Health Sector. This care is particularly crucial for the most vulnerable population groups, such as children, older adults and people with chronic respiratory diseases.
Evolution of Frontal Systems: Cold Front 13 and 14
Regarding the evolution of front-end systems, the SMN has provided a detailed technical analysis. The Arctic air mass that drove cold front number 13 begins to modify its thermodynamic characteristics, which will allow a gradual rise in daytime temperatures in the northern, northeastern, eastern and central regions of the national territory. This thermal moderation process, however, will be short-lived.
The cold front number 14 is on its way to enter the country on Thursday night. This system is associated with a polar trough and a cyclonic circulation in the upper levels of the atmosphere, synoptic configurations that enhance its activity. During Friday and Saturday, the front will move over the northwest and northern regions of Mexico, generating a new and pronounced drop in temperature, strong winds and rain that will vary from heavy to very heavy in these areas.
A notable aspect of this phenomenon is the conditions conducive to solid precipitation. Snow or sleet is anticipated in the mountainous areas of Baja California and Sonora, a meteorological event that requires special attention due to its implications on road infrastructure and the safety of local communities. The interaction between these cold fronts and the country’s topography defines the pattern of distribution and intensity of rain and cold, making constant monitoring essential for risk management.
