Analysis of the meteorological event
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a detailed forecast on the effects of cold front number 10, a low pressure system that is generating adverse weather conditions in multiple regions of Mexico. This meteorological phenomenon is characterized by the interaction between cold and warm air masses, creating significant atmospheric instability that manifests itself through various severe weather events.
The current synoptic configuration shows that the frontal system is causing intense wind patterns with gusts reaching between 55 and 70 kilometers per hour in the northern states of the country. Specifically, conditions conducive to the formation of whirlwinds or dust devils have been identified in areas of Coahuila (north and northeast), Nuevo León (north) and Tamaulipas (northwest). At the same time, southerly winds are recorded with intensities of 40 to 60 km/h on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, while other regions will experience gusts of 35 to 50 km/h.
Geographical distribution of the phenomena
The technical analysis identifies that strong winds will affect numerous federal entities, including Chihuahua, San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca (specifically in the isthmus of Tehuantepec), and the coastal areas of Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. This wind configuration generates a high wave regime with predicted heights between 2 and 3 meters on the western coasts of Baja California and Baja California Sur, and 1.5 to 2.5 meters on the coasts of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
As for the precipitation regime, frontal system number 10 is generating strong punctual rains with estimated accumulations between 25 and 50 millimeters in specific regions of Jalisco (south), Colima (north and east), Michoacán (west and coast), Guerrero (southeast), Oaxaca (southwest) and Chiapas (south). Additionally, intervals of showers with accumulations of 5 to 25 mm are forecast in the State of Mexico, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
Associated risks and preventive measures
The weather conditions described present significant additional risks. rainfall could be accompanied by atmospheric electrical activity and solid precipitation in the form of hail. These convective phenomena increase the probability of flash floods, severe flooding, slides in steep slope areas and floods in topographically low areas of the aforementioned states.
The meteorological agency has warned that the predicted winds have the capacity to knock down medium-sized trees and vulnerable advertising structures, which is why it has issued an exhortation to the population to maintain constant attention to official warnings and take extreme precautionary measures in the face of wind and high waves.
Complementarily, the cold front is inducing a significant temperature drop, with minimum temperatures that will range between -5 and 0 degrees Celsius during the early hours of Sunday in mountain areas of Baja California, Chihuahua and Durango. Other mountainous regions will experience temperatures between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius, affecting elevated areas of Zacatecas, Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Veracruz.
In these adverse thermal conditions, the SMN has established specific recommendations that include wearing appropriate thermal clothing, maintaining correct hydration, avoiding prolonged exposure to the cold and minimizing sudden changes in temperature. Particularly, the need for special protection is emphasized for people with chronic diseases, child population and older adults, demographic groups most vulnerable to the effects of thermal decline.
The complex interaction between these multiple meteorological phenomena requires continuous monitoring by authorities and citizens. The trajectory and evolution of cold front 10 will determine the intensity and duration of these climatic events, so it is recommended to maintain constant surveillance of the official meteorological information channels.
