The life and legacy of Violeta Chamorro
The former president of Nicaragua, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, died this Saturday in Costa Rica at the age of 95, after a long illness. Her death occurs in a context of growing authoritarianism in her country, marked by the regime of Daniel Ortega, whom she defeated at the polls in 1990. Chamorro was the first woman elected president in Latin America, a milestone that transcended borders and symbolized the hope of reconciliation for a nation devastated by civil war.
From the Somoza opposition to the presidency
Born in Rivas in 1929, Chamorro grew up in a wealthy family and married the journalist Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, symbol of the resistance against the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza. After the murder of her husband in 1978, she became involved in the political struggle, first as part of the Government Board of National Reconstruction after the fall of Somocismo, and then as a critic of Sandinismo. His leadership was consolidated when he headed the National Opposition Union (UNO), a coalition that managed to defeat Daniel Ortega in the 1990 elections.
His electoral victory was a watershed: Nicaragua went from a fratricidal war to a process of pacification. Under his mandate (1990-1997), armed groups were demobilized, military influence in politics was reduced, and a fragile but significant democratic transition began. However, his government also faced criticism for concessions to the Sandinistas and economic difficulties.
A legacy at risk
In his final years, Chamorro lived under the persecution of the Ortega regime, which confiscated his family’s properties and silenced any dissidence. His death in exile reflects the authoritarian regression suffered by Nicaragua, where Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo have systematically eliminated the opposition, the independent press and even the Catholic Church.
His family announced that his remains will remain in Costa Rica until Nicaragua regains democracy. “Doña Violeta”, as she was affectionately known, leaves a clear message: peace is only possible through dialogue and respect for institutions. Today, his country seems to have forgotten that lesson.
