Immigration reform in the Senate

The Senate is analyzing a proposal to guarantee an orderly and safe reception of Mexicans repatriated from the United States. The initiative – promoted by Senator Olga Patricia Sosa (Morena) – seeks to prevent thousands of people, including children and adolescents, from reaching the border in vulnerable conditions.

According to the text, the National Migration Institute (INM) must issue a certificate of reception and safe channeling when receiving repatriated, returned or foreigners readmitted by Mexico. The goal is to establish a clear protocol that protects your well-being.

The proposal arises in a context of increase in migratory flows. Minors are the main focus of the measure, due to their special vulnerability. With this reform, the Senate seeks to mitigate the risks and ensure adequate reintegration in the country.

Death in Orlando

A 28-year-old Mexican man, originally from Guanajuato, lost his life after being run over by a tractor-trailer in Orlando, Florida, while allegedly trying to withdraw from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) operation. Juan Jairo Coronilla became a new figure on the list of deaths linked to US immigration actions.

The facts

The incident occurred on the morning of July 14. Coronilla was with three companions at a gas station when, upon noticing the presence of ICE agents, they tried to leave the place. Witnesses indicated that the young man crossed a road, slipped on the wet grass and was hit by a truck from the Eggland’s Best company.

The family claimed that Coronilla was legally residing in the United States on a work visa. His wife, Yezzika Alamilla, traveled to Florida to identify the body and arrange for its repatriation to Mexico. He was the father of two children and, according to his loved ones, a hard-working and happy person.

Context of claims

Since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, at least 17 Mexicans have died in circumstances linked to ICE. Faced with this trend, Claudia Sheinbaum’s government has toughened its diplomatic and legal stance, filing complaints with US authorities and international organizations. Coronilla’s family demands that the facts be clarified and that they receive support for the repatriation of his remains.

The IMSS Bienestar will allocate 46 billion pesos to strengthening the public health system during the rest of the six-year term. The plan includes 87 strategic projects to expand medical coverage in different regions of the country.

Key projects

Alejandro Svarch, general director of the organization, explained that 43 hospitals will be built, of which 35 will replace obsolete facilities. In addition, 21 hospitals will be rehabilitated and expanded, and 23 health centers will be built, some with expanded services to strengthen the first level of care.

Between 2024 and 2026, IMSS Bienestar has already opened 19 hospitals in states such as Baja California, Guerrero, Michoacán and Oaxaca. Svarch assured that these units offer highly specialized services and free consultations for the population without social security.

New openings

In the coming weeks operations will begin:

• Center of Excellence in Midwifery and Wellbeing, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.
• Clinic for addiction care and community rehabilitation in Apatzingán, Michoacán.
• Health Center with Expanded Services (CESSA) of San Pablo Yaganiza, Oaxaca.

The strategy seeks to consolidate a modern hospital network with greater care capacity, prioritizing those who do not have social security.
