New legal resource from the Altiplano

The former governor of Baja California, Ernesto Ruffo Appel, filed a new amparo against the Attorney General’s Office (FGR). They accuse him of alleged organized crime and smuggling linked to the so-called fiscal huachicol.

Ruffo Appel, held in the Altiplano prison, challenged 17 acts. Among them: the arrest warrant, his transfer out of Baja California, the deprivation of his freedom and possible irregularities during his capture.

Complaints of lack of communication and lack of medical attention

The defense claims that the former president was held incommunicado, without informing his family or lawyers about his whereabouts. They also point out that he was denied access to essential medications for his treatment.

A federal judge admitted the lawsuit, although it has not been reported whether he granted a provisional suspension. Last Friday, a judge in Ensenada granted an outright suspension to prevent Ruffo Appel from being held incommunicado or suffering acts of abuse.

The FGR detained him while he was at a meeting in Ensenada, Baja California. The case is still in judicial process.

A 28-year-old Mexican man, originally from Guanajuato, lost his life after being run over by a tractor-trailer in Orlando, Florida, while allegedly trying to withdraw from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) operation. Juan Jairo Coronilla became a new figure on the list of deaths linked to US immigration actions.

The facts

The incident occurred on the morning of July 14. Coronilla was with three companions at a gas station when, upon noticing the presence of ICE agents, they tried to leave the place. Witnesses indicated that the young man crossed a road, slipped on the wet grass and was hit by a truck from the Eggland’s Best company.

The family claimed that Coronilla was legally residing in the United States on a work visa. His wife, Yezzika Alamilla, traveled to Florida to identify the body and arrange for its repatriation to Mexico. He was the father of two children and, according to his loved ones, a hard-working and happy person.

Context of claims

Since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, at least 17 Mexicans have died in circumstances linked to ICE. Faced with this trend, Claudia Sheinbaum’s government has toughened its diplomatic and legal stance, filing complaints with US authorities and international organizations. Coronilla’s family demands that the facts be clarified and that they receive support for the repatriation of his remains.

Integrity filter for Morena candidates

The national leader of Morena, Ariadna Montiel, announced that all party candidates for popularly elected positions for the 2026 Electoral Process will be evaluated by the INE Candidacy Integrity Verification Commission. The objective is to identify risks before formal registration.

Montiel explained that the review will cover more than 20 thousand owner and substitute candidates. Morena will carry out a first internal evaluation with public information and will ask the Security Cabinet for support to verify possible links with organized crime.

In addition to the relationship with criminal groups, allegations of political violence against women, gender violence and acts of corruption will be analyzed. The intention is to have a prior filter before September, when the electoral process begins.
