Impact of vaping on respiratory health
In Mexico, despite the regulations established by the General Law for Tobacco Control, the Civil Hospitals of Guadalajara report an increase in the care of patients with lung diseases associated with the consumption of tobacco and electronic devices. According to data from the Global Tobacco Survey, approximately 15% of the Mexican population smokes, but now a new concern arises: the use of electronic cigarettes among adolescents and young adults.
COPD and smoking: an alarming relationship
The Dr. Gerardo Antonio Rojas Sánchez, Head of the Pulmonary Physiology Service at the Fray Antonio Alcalde Civil Hospital, highlighted that 60% of the 3,000 patients treated annually develop Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), with 70% of the cases directly linked to smoking. However, since 2010, a worrying phenomenon has been observed: the appearance of pulmonary symptoms in vape users in just 2 or 3 years, in contrast to the 10 years it took for them to appear with traditional tobacco.
The Dr. Gustavo Rosales Chávez, pulmonologist at the Juan I. Menchaca Civil Hospital, corroborated this finding by detecting in consultation adolescents aged 15 and 16 years with atypical respiratory symptoms, such as persistent cough, dyspnea and wheezing, possibly associated with vaping. “These cases were non-existent a decade ago,” he said.
Comprehensive approach to quit smoking
Faced with this problem, Dr. Eduardo Alberto Villaseñor Rodríguez, cardiologist at Hospital Civil de Oriente, emphasized the need for a multidisciplinary approach to treat nicotine addiction. “It is not enough to recommend giving up the habit; nutritional, psychological counseling and nicotine replacement therapies are required,” he explained. Furthermore, he stressed that drugs can be an essential complement in this process.
Specialists agreed that, although electronic cigarettes are promoted as a “less harmful” alternative, clinical evidence shows that they accelerate lung damage and represent a significant risk to public health, especially among young people.
Conclusion and call to action
Given the increase in cases, experts urged to strengthen prevention campaigns and to regulate vaping devices more strictly. Evidence-based information is key to discouraging consumption and promoting healthy lifestyles.
