Dinner in Versailles seals an unexpected agreement
French President Emmanuel Macron achieved one of the most symbolic moments of his administration. During a dinner at the Palace of Versailles, his American counterpart Donald Trump signed a preliminary agreement to end the conflict with Iran. The signing occurred within the framework of the G7 summit.
The event was planned as a celebration of the bilateral relationship. However, it became a key stage of international politics. The agreement includes a ceasefire, negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Additional support to Ukraine
Macron also got Trump to show stronger support for Ukraine in its war against Russia. The turn is relevant for European allies, after previous diplomatic tensions between Washington and kyiv.
European officials noted that Macron was not directly involved in the negotiations with Iran. However, his diplomatic strategy and the use of settings such as Versailles reinforced European influence on United States decisions.
The G7 summit concluded with joint calls to increase military support for Ukraine and toughen sanctions against Russia. European leaders consider that the meeting marked progress in transatlantic coordination, despite previous differences with the US administration.
The preliminary agreement with Iran not only represents a step in diplomatic relations, but also underlines the importance of international cooperation to resolve global conflicts.
