A classroom adrift in the digital age
The numbers are overwhelming and paint a worrying picture. Almost 7 out of 10 students already use artificial intelligence tools for their assignments. But here’s the thing: about 80% have no idea what policies their school follows on the matter. And less than 30% have received anything resembling training.
In the case of teachers, the situation is not very different. Around 70% are also unaware of the guidelines. And an overwhelming 90% are crying out for training to navigate these new waters.
“This exercise gathered more than one million 77 thousand valid surveys, more than 1.5 million responses,” reported Undersecretary Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí.
These data, which come from a massive national survey, were presented by the SEP. There are many voices: approximately 166 thousand teachers participated. The photo that emerges is that of an educational system that was surpassed by technology almost without realizing it.
The cracks that the survey revealed
The research not only measured usage, but identified key differences between educational subsystems and gender gaps in technology access. A particularly striking finding is that 9% of students and 5% of teachers report using AI as emotional support.
Faced with this diagnosis, the Ministry of Public Education has already outlined a work route. The plan includes everything from ethical guidelines to curricular adjustments, new evaluation schemes and, crucially, digital literacy to close the gaps that are opening.
In the same session it was announced that the SaberesMX platform, promoted by the federal government, already offers the course “Naming and telling the world”. This program, developed with the INEA, seeks to train literacy teachers through social service.
The closing of the event was the presentation of the National Higher Education Program 2026–2030. This document is intended to be the guiding framework for the coming years in a sector that clearly needs to catch up. The question now is whether stocks will keep up with the rapid pace of technological change.
