The SEP wanted to bring forward vacations, but several states said “no mothers”
The Ministry of Public Education announced that the 2025-2026 school year would end on June 5. The response of several governors? A resounding no.
Jalisco was the first to mark the distance. The state Secretary of Education blurted out: “We did not ask for this and we do not share it.” So they will maintain classes until June 30. The message: learning morrillos is not negotiable.
Guanajuato was not silent either. Governor Libya Dennise asked the federation to reconsider, remembering that we are still paying the bill for the post-pandemic delay. “A cut like this affects evaluations and programs already set up,” he said.
Nuevo León joined the rebellion. Samuel García confirmed that classes will continue there until June 19. And to top it off, he announced workshops and camps so that families are not left hanging.
“The priority must be to guarantee the learning of girls and boys” — Government of Jalisco.
The matter has already opened a national debate. Specialists, teachers and heads of families warn: reducing school days not only increases educational inequalities, it also complicates the logistics of millions of households that have no one to leave their children with.
The irony: the SEP says that it is to “optimize resources”, but the states see it as a measure that benefits no one. Another desk occurrence without thinking about reality? It seems so.
