A script change, not a casting error
President Claudia Sheinbaum was clear: the departure of General Óscar Rentería Schazarino as head of the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat is not a performance issue. He described it as a simple replacement within the strategy. “It is not bad performance, but simply an important change that had to be made,” he said.
The explanation behind the scenes
For its part, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) gave its version. They explained that the general’s original designation was based on his career and professionalism. They highlighted that during his administration he promoted coordination between federal, state and municipal authorities.
But here comes the plot twist: being an active military man, he needs to continue his professional path within the Army. That is why his relief was considered appropriate. The general will be reinstated in other military activities to continue accumulating experience.
The strategic move
The most revealing thing is what is coming. Sedena announced that it has already been proposed to the governor of Sinaloa that the new head also be an active military member. This is not a simple staff turnover; It is a reaffirmation of the central role of the Army in the security strategy of the most complicated state.
While Sheinbaum talks about ‘relays’, the military talks about ‘professional routes’. Two narratives for the same movement. The final message is clear: Sinaloa continues to be military territory, only the actors on scene change.
