The official version of the capo’s fall
Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security, went to the media to give his part. According to him, everything was fast and clean. A lightning Army operation that ended in less than 24 hours with Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘El Mencho’.
But between the lines, the numbers tell another story.
“It was an operation that the army carried out in less than 24 hours”
That is the official phrase. What it does not say with the same clarity is the cost. That mobilization on February 22 unleashed drug blockades, burning of vehicles, assaults… and left 62 dead. Military, national guards, criminals and civilians. All for one goal.
The three components of the mission
García Harfuch broke down the action into three fronts: a ground front with special forces, an air front with six helicopters and support from Air Force planes. The direct confrontation, he claims, lasted about two hours.
The neutralization of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was achieved first. An objective that, in the words of the secretary, “had done so much damage to Mexico.”
Then came the part of the speech that always follows this news: the message against impunity. What hurts the victims the most is precisely that, he said. And this action would be a clear message that there will no longer be impunity for those who commit crimes in the country.
It’s the perfect narrative. Fast, effective and with a moral included. All that remains is to ask those 62 families what they really think about justice and impunity.
