Environmental protection and ecotourism in Mahahual
After canceling the Perfect Day tourism project, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that they are seeking to grant a protection category to Mahahual to allow only ecotourism.
“This can only be done in coordination with the community. We announce that we will work with the community of southern Quintana Roo for a special decree in this area, so that great tourism is not developed, but rather ecotourism together with the communities,” he declared in his morning conference held in Coatzacoalcos.
The Secretary of the Environment, Alicia Bárcena, pointed out that the community’s concerns are being heard to “develop together ecological tourism that allows combining economic development and employment with environmental protection.” He added that the decree will guide the area as a protection area and a reference for tourism on the Mayan coast.
“The community expressed its willingness to receive investments, but that generate local economic and social benefits for its hotels, its restaurants and its small businesses,” Bárcena pointed out.
Sebastián Ramírez, head of Fonatur, explained that they will work on an instrument to limit large-scale tourism and guarantee exclusively ecotourism. In addition, the México Circular and Holbox Circular programs were presented, which seek to replace single-use plastics and promote recycling on beaches and tourist areas.
Governor Mara Lezama confirmed a state investment of 197.5 million pesos for various works in the region.
