The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) stopped the ‘Perfect Day’ project of the Royal Caribbean shipping company in Mahahual, Quintana Roo. The decision was announced by the head of the agency, Alicia Bárcena, during a press conference.
“Royal Caribbean’s ‘Perfect Day’ project in Mahahual, Quintana Roo will not be approved,” said Bárcena.
The announcement is part of the environmental protection policies promoted by the federal government for the region. Although the technical reasons for the rejection were not detailed, the official reiterated the commitment to prioritize the conservation of coastal ecosystems.
The project, which included a theme park and a cruise ship dock, had generated employment expectations and economic benefits in the community of Mahahual, one of the emerging destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Environmental and local organizations had expressed their opposition due to the possible impact on the reefs and mangroves in the area.
With this cancellation, the government sends a clear signal about the limits to massive tourism development in sensitive areas. Semarnat will evaluate new proposals under sustainability criteria, according to what Bárcena said.
So far, Royal Caribbean has not issued an official position regarding the denial.
