Mobilization for rights and memory
Members of the non-binary community marched this Tuesday in Mexico City. The protest was held on the occasion of the International Day of Non-Binary People. They demanded full recognition of their identities, as well as dignified public services free of discrimination in gender reaffirmation processes.
The mobilization began in the Palestine Libre square on Alameda Central. The participants remembered Judge Ociel Baena and her partner, Dorian Nieves Herrera, who were deprived of their lives in November 2023. During the protest they held a “fan” in memory of Baena, whom they pointed out as a relevant figure in the defense of the rights of non-binary people.
“Non-binary people exist and enrich our communities,” read the slogans.
The protesters demanded their right to live with freedom, security and legal recognition. They also placed missing persons files. They expressed criticism of the situation of violence and disappearances in the country.
During the march, attacks, acts of hate and discriminatory speeches against members of the LGBT+ community were reported. Participants also recalled recent cases of violence. They demanded greater institutional dialogue to address the demands of trans and non-binary people.
