Call for a Student Mobilization Day
Collectives related to the Generation Z movement, made up mainly of students, have made a call through social networks and digital forums for a new day of protests this Thursday. This action is framed as a continuation of the mobilization inspired by the demonstrations in Nepal that occurred in September, which were motivated by the demand for better living conditions for youth. The replication of this global phenomenon highlights the interconnection of youth struggles and the adoption of transnational organizing strategies.
According to the publications spread on the digital platforms X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and Facebook, the demonstrations will establish two parallel routes in Mexico City. The first route will have its starting point at the Ángel de la Independencia and will conclude at the Zócalo plateau. The second route will take place within University City, starting in the vicinity of the Central Library and moving towards the Rectory Tower of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This double avenue of demonstration seeks to maximize the participation of both the general public and the university community specifically.
Motivations and Character of Mobilization
In the invitations, the organizers have called on young people and sympathizers to express their discontent, particularly against the arrests of members of the Black Bloc and other participants in the protests the previous weekend, actions that have been described as “arbitrary“. The organizers have been emphatic in clarifying that both mobilizations will be carried out in a totally peaceful manner. The central objective is to maintain order and cohesion among the contingents, prioritizing a demonstration of collective force without incident.
The discontent that motivates this call focuses on structural problems such as insecurity, precarious living conditions, lack of access to decent housing and the scarcity of job opportunities for young people. Likewise, the fundamental purpose of the march is to demand compliance with a list of demands. This document is aimed at strengthening institutional counterweights within the democratic framework and strengthening the mechanisms of citizen participation, seeking a real impact on public policies that affect this sector of the population.
Logistics and National Scope of the Student Strike
The mobilizations are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., with an estimated completion time around 4:00 p.m.. As expressed by the organizers, the strategy seeks to add citizens who walk through the streets of the city, as well as students, teachers and workers of University City. The scope is not limited to UNAM; The participation of students from other universities at the national level is being promoted, evidencing an attempt to coordinate a broad-based movement.
Within the framework of this call, through Facebook coordination has begun with higher education institutions of great relevance in the country. Among them are the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the University of Guadalajara (UDG), the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL), the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) and the Tecnológico de Monterrey. The participation of these study houses is crucial to demonstrate the magnitude and academic legitimacy of the movement. According to the spokespersons, the strategic commitment is to “show that the strength of the movement lies in the union of the students and the ability to articulate themselves without confrontations“, a principle that seeks to differentiate this mobilization from other expressions of public protest.
The organizers have indicated that their main objective for this November 20 is for student voices to be heard from different parts of the country. This aims to reinforce the identity of a movement that is assumed to be generational and that, according to its statements, “the government disqualifies.” This date, loaded with historical symbolism in Mexico, is used to emphasize the search for a new social and political demand led by young people. The mobilization represents a meticulously organized effort to channel social unrest through peaceful channels and with a clearly defined agenda of demands, seeking to establish a dialogue with the authorities from a position of unity and firmness.
