A black Sunday in Naples
The Diego Armando Maradona stadium whistled. There was no dissimulation. Napoli left the field with the boos of their own people echoing after a clear defeat, 2-0, against a Lazio that was much superior.
A very hard blow that practically hands the scudetto to Inter Milan. If the nerazzurri win in Torino next Sunday and Napoli do not beat Cremonese, the party will be theirs.
“It was Napoli’s first defeat at home in Serie A this season.”
Lazio had no mercy. From the sixth minute, with a goal from Matteo Cancellieri, they showed their intentions. It could have been more: they saved a penalty and wasted other clear chances before Toma Basic sealed the task in the second half.
The physical and mental difference was abysmal. The Romans ran more, pressed better and had clearer ideas. Napoli seemed like a team without energy or answers.
Other lights and shadows of the day
Meanwhile, in Rome, emotions were mixed for Gian Piero Gasperini. His current team, Roma, drew 1-1 against his former club, Atalanta. A result that does not help much for anyone’s European aspirations.
The week had been intense for Gasperini after a public encounter with Claudio Ranieri. He seemed emotional when remembering his nine years in Bergamo.
At the bottom of the table, there was joy for Parma. Nesta Elphege’s first goal in Serie A gave them a key victory in Udinese (0-1) that brings them very close to ensuring permanence.
The lesson of the weekend is clear: In this sport, as in life, you cannot let your guard down for a moment. Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation. Napoli learned it the hard way.
