From ‘Mom’ to sisterhood
María León has music in her veins. His first song, ‘Mamá’, was written when he was five years old. The success with Playa Limbo and as a soloist proved him right, but the path was not rosy.
For her, being a woman in this industry involves extra effort and overcoming complicated situations. > “As women in the industry it is very difficult to say no, but when you learn to say it, you feel better, you feel wonderful,” she remarks.
Technology as an ally
The one also known as ‘Sergeant León’ sees a positive change. Society is now more receptive to abuse, and technology plays a key role.
“Maybe before we allowed things that we didn’t know were wrong… Now that there are so many witnesses, videos… it’s much easier to expose a situation,” he explains. For her, raising her voice is no longer an option, it is a necessity.
A new album and an anthem of sorority
At the beginning of the year he premiered ‘The Ladies and the Tramp’, alongside the Spanish Julia Medina. The lyrics tell the story of two women who argue over a man, but decide to make peace and party together.
“I am very happy with the generations that are coming. Now… we, women, are very aware of feminism and sisterhood,” Medina highlights. > “When we unite we are unstoppable.”
This song is the first preview of his next album, the most personal so far. > “I was a little afraid to take it out, but I think it’s important to talk… I know there are many people who feel like me,” he confesses.
Consistency above all
She recently participated in the Voz a tu voz event, a seminar for female creators organized by the Society of Authors. There he spoke about common challenges.
For María, coherence is essential, even if it has brought her problems. > “It is rediscovering justice with oneself; it has been an important element in turning something that can be conflictive into something beautiful.”
Their message is clear: the road is hard, but talking and joining together makes a difference.
