The central themes of the meeting
The United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, held a meeting in Washington with the Secretary of Economy of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard. The objective was to analyze bilateral trade, the US deficit with Mexico and possible changes in the next review of the T-MEC.
Greer explained that both parties agreed on the need for greater trade balance. A priority for Washington is to reduce deficits and strengthen regional supply chains to become less dependent on Asia.
The head of the USTR suggested tightening the rules of origin of the agreement. The idea is that products exported to the United States include more components manufactured in the region, especially of American origin. This would prevent goods with high participation from third countries from receiving benefits from the treaty.
The meeting occurred amid US investigations into possible forced labor practices in Mexico and Canada. These investigations could lead to the application of tariffs. Greer indicated that both governments require strong regulations to prevent the entry of goods manufactured under these conditions.
The meeting is part of the preparations for the review of the T-MEC, scheduled for July 20 in Mexico City. The agreement will remain in force until 2036 with annual reviews. Washington and Mexico seek to define adjustments to strengthen the economic integration of North America.
