A costly mistake and explosive batting
Carson Kelly hit a three-run homer, but the real story was that sixth inning. The Cubs were tied 3-3 and needed a boost. They did it, but with help.
Mayza threw slightly wide toward second base, and Bryson Stott couldn’t catch the ball.
That defensive error changed everything. Instead of getting out of the inning, the Cubs loaded the bases. And Nico Hoerner and Alex Bregman did not forgive. Each had a two-run single.
Suddenly, a tie turned into a four-run lead. That’s baseball: a single game can decide everything.
The shot that held the lead
As the offense exploded, Colin Rea did his job from the mound. The right-hander pitched six solid innings to earn the victory. He was the anchor that allowed the Cubs to play calmly after taking the lead.
Panamanian Edmundo Sosa had hit a home run for the Phillies, but in the end it was not enough. The combination of Kelly’s batting power and Rea’s consistency was unbeatable tonight.
A victory that speaks of capitalizing on opportunities. When your opponent makes a mistake, you have to make them pay. And the Cubs understood it perfectly.
