An unexpected goodbye at the top
The news fell like a blast in the locker room. Javier Mascherano will not continue as coach of Inter Miami. And this happens just four months after lifting the MLS trophy with Lionel Messi and company.
The club confirmed the departure this Tuesday. The reason, according to the official statement, is personal reasons. It is the same argument that Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino used when he left office in November, opening the door precisely to Mascherano.
“I want to inform everyone that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my time as coach of Inter Miami,” said the ‘Jefecito’.
One more twist in the recent history of the Florida team. Mascherano and Messi, old teammates from Barça and the Albiceleste, met again to make history… but this alliance on the bench was shorter than expected.
And now what? Another Argentine with a Barça past arrives
To cover the loss comes, at least for now, another name linked to Barcelona. This is Guillermo Hoyos.
His letter of introduction is powerful: he is credited with having discovered a very young Messi in the Catalan club’s youth ranks. He even predicted that that boy would become one of the best of all time.
The question now is whether that clinical eye for detecting youth talent also transfers to the bench of a star team like Inter Miami. The challenge is served.
