The rebirth of Johan Vásquez
Four years after being left out of Gerardo Martino’s call for Qatar 2022, Johan Vásquez is emerging as a key piece of the Mexican team in the World Cup that starts on Thursday. The central defender, captain of the Italian Genoa, is experiencing his best football moment.
“I always consider myself a leader. I like to contribute and help my teammates in any way I can. We are many captains, many leaders who are going to help this team,” he declared at a press conference on Tuesday.
His evolution and debut
Vásquez recognizes that his exclusion in Qatar was a learning experience. “They are two different moments in my career. In the last World Cup I am aware that it was me who did not arrive,” he said.
Mexico opens Group A against South Africa, with South Korea and the Czech Republic as remaining rivals. Regarding the debut, the defender warns: “All countries and all teams deserve respect. In the World Cup it is kill or be killed.”
Playing at home gives you a special calm. “Seeing your children, your parents, the feeling that you are at home… these are things that motivate you every day.”
Connection with César Montes
Vásquez highlighted the chemistry with his defensive partner César Montes, whom he has known since he was 10 years old in the Pachuca basic forces. “We have known each other since we were 10 years old, we have the same customs, our parents know each other. He is a captain and a leader on and off the field,” he said.
The atmosphere in the locker room, he assured, is excellent. “I’m hungry to help my teammates and the fans so they can feel proud. In Mexico we are warm, hosts. It will be a nice World Cup.”
