Exhortation from Congress for conflict in Playa Las Cocinas
The Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union plans to approve a point of agreement for the Nayarit authorities to address the social and environmental conflict derived from a tourist development in Playa Las Cocinas, located in Punta de Mita, municipality of Bahía de Banderas.
Senator Ivideliza Reyes pointed out that residents of the area have maintained a permanent sit-in for weeks. They reject the works because they consider that they cause ecological damage and limit public access to the beach.
The project is linked to the company Cantiles de Mita S.A. de C.V., subsidiary of Grupo DINE. Residents and activists denounce a lack of dialogue and attention from the authorities.
Threats against activist increase tension
Activist Pepe Ávila reported having received threats and constant surveillance, in addition to an investigation folder against him. The situation has increased tension in the community.
The case reflects a broader conflict over land use and tourism development in the region. By law, beaches are common-use assets, but in high-value destinations like Bahía de Banderas, tourism growth has intensified disputes between communities, companies and authorities.
