The Huston dynasty lands in Mexico
If you grew up with Escape to Victory or Under the Volcano, you know that the Hustons are like the kings of cinema. John, Danny, Anjelica… and now Jack. Yes, the nephew you saw in American Hustle and Fargo launches into direction with Fight Day, his debut film. And it’s not just any story: a boxer faces his last professional fight and, incidentally, the end of his life. Yes, as it sounds.
“When I hear those names I want to honor them, but also give my own contributions to the industry,” says Jack in an interview.
Not everything is a surname
The National Cinematheque is the first to screen this independent film. Because, even if you think that being Huston opens doors, the reality is that the last name is not always a VIP pass. Jack knows: “There are always external forces that try to change your mind, but you have to have the strength to keep going.”
Real hits, real stories
Michael C. Pitt and Ron Perlman got into the ring. The first trained until Christmas so that the blows felt real. “They made sure there was nothing fake,” says Jack. And they did it: they filmed the fight at the end, so that no one got hurt. Because, in the end, it’s not about boxing, but about a boxer in a difficult moment.
“When I made this movie it was back to when I was 19,” says Ron Perlman. “I always followed Muhammad Ali.”
The cast is completed by Steve Buscemi, Nicolette Robinson and Joe Pesci. So, if you are looking for something that makes you feel more than just an infinite scroll, this is your date.
