Iñárritu’s return to English-language cinema

Warner Bros. presented the first trailer for Digger, the new film by Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. It marks his return to the English language since The Revenant (2015) and, for the first time, unites him with Tom Cruise.

The trailer shows Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a billionaire whose company causes a global environmental crisis. Far from the action hero, he appears with prosthetics, overweight, gray hair and a southern accent. His character is “the most powerful man in the world,” but also the one responsible for planetary chaos.

What is it about? According to the official synopsis, Rockwell begins a race to convince the world that he can save humanity, while trying to contain the consequences of the disaster that he himself created. “Everything changes. One day you’re a king. The next, you’re just ashes in a box,” Cruise says in the trailer.

One of the key moments occurs when Digger minimizes the displacement of a glacier in Greenland, despite its irreversible threat. Meanwhile, the president of the United States—played by John Goodman—demands a solution to avoid a catastrophe.

Iñárritu describes the film as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions”: it mixes black humor, political criticism and environmental crisis.

Cast and production

In addition to Cruise and Goodman, the cast includes Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D’Arcy and Sophie Wilde. Filming lasted six months in the United Kingdom, with photography by Emmanuel Lubezki (Oscar winner for The Revenant) in VistaVision format.

For Cruise, Digger represents a turn after more than a decade in franchises like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun. In addition, it is his first project with Warner Bros. after its development agreement signed in 2024. The theatrical release will be on October 2.

The event demonstrated once again that Wimbledon is a meeting point for great personalities from film, music and royalty.

Farewell to a cinema legend

New Zealand actor Sam Neill, famous for playing paleontologist Alan Grant in Jurassic Park (1993), died this Monday, July 13. His family confirmed it through a statement on social networks.

The news took his followers by surprise. Neill had publicly announced that he had stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but claimed to be in remission and “cancer-free.”

“Sam was surrounded by his family and passed away with the dignity that characterized his entire life,” his loved ones said. They requested privacy and respect, and announced that they will share more details later.

Hours before his departure was announced, the actor’s Instagram profile was still active. His most recent post—before the family statement—was a video in which he supported an initiative against the construction of a gold mine in the Dunstan Mountains, in the Central Otago region of New Zealand.

“I am not against mining, I am against this mine. My family has been here for more than 150 years, I have a connection with this land,” he declared in the interview, held last April.

In his previous post, Neill celebrated an Australian Television Logie Award nomination for his work on the series The Twelve. “I’m so happy to have received a nomination today…thanks to a wonderful cast and crew,” he wrote.
