Military escalation on the Lebanese border
The Israeli Army has begun this Friday a series of air operations against strategic targets in southern Lebanon, as confirmed by Israeli military sources. The attacks, described as a “preventive response”, targeted infrastructure linked to Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite political-military movement, in what represents a direct violation of the ceasefire agreed in November 2023.
Operational details and geographic scope
According to reports from the newspaper L’Orient le Jour, at least twelve raids were carried out in a period of 15 minutes, hitting towns such as Jabal el Rihane, Blat and Wadi Borghoz. Israeli forces claimed to have destroyed weapons warehouses and logistics centers where Hezbollah was trying to “reactivate its operations.” This action is part of the policy of surgical strikes that Israel applies to neutralize threats, arguing that the Lebanese army has not complied with dismantling these networks.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense stressed in a statement: “The presence of arsenals and military personnel in the southern zone constitutes an explicit violation of international agreements.” For their part, sources close to Hezbollah minimized the damage, although they acknowledged “minor impacts” on abandoned facilities.
Political context and violation of agreements
The ceasefire, mediated by the UN, established that the Lebanese government would assume progressive control of the border. However, Israel claims inaction in the face of the persistent influence of Hezbollah, classified as a terrorist organization by Tel Aviv and its Western allies. Regional analysts point out that these bombings reflect a strategy of active deterrence, where Israel seeks to impose operational costs on its adversaries without unleashing an open war.
It should be noted that the affected area has been the scene of recurring tensions since the 2006 war. Security experts warn that, despite the relative containment, each incursion increases the risk of a spiral of violence that could involve external actors such as Iran, Hezbollah’s main sponsor.
International repercussions and next steps
The international community, including the European Union and the United States, has called for restraint. However, the lack of independent verification mechanisms in the area limits supervision capacity. Meanwhile, the Lebanese government condemned the attacks as a “violation of its sovereignty,” although without announcing immediate retaliation.
This episode reinforces the need to resume multilateral negotiations to stabilize the region. However, with irreconcilable positions and fragile trust between the parties, the prospect of a lasting solution seems distant.
