Historic reduction in homicides
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a preliminary decrease of 49% in intentional homicides, going from a daily average of 86.9 in September 2024 to 44.3 in May 2026. She attributed the result to the work of the Security Cabinet, with coordination with states and the Attention to Causes strategy and zero impunity.
“The 49 percent reduction in homicides has to do with permanent, rigorous, professional, honest work…”, he declared at the morning conference.
Strategy achievements
The Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, detailed that 2,400 clandestine methamphetamine laboratories were dismantled, 400 tons of drugs were seized and fentanyl seizures at the border fell 76%. The arrests exceed 54,300 alleged perpetrators, and 6,798 young people were incorporated into educational and labor programs.
In Sinaloa, homicides decreased almost 45%, with 2,500 arrests and the dismantling of 2,000 laboratories. Significant decreases were also observed in states such as Guanajuato (-68.5%), State of Mexico (-60.6%) and Nuevo León (-77.1%).
Deployment of forces
The Secretary of Defense, Ricardo Trevilla, reported 107 thousand elements deployed, including 13 thousand 344 in Sinaloa and 10 thousand 804 in Guerrero. The Navy, with 79,204 troops, supports with boats and aircraft. In addition, 85 current and former officials were arrested, including six active municipal presidents.
