Arrest of Fenerbahce president amid national investigation
The president of Fenerbahçe, one of the most emblematic and powerful sports institutions in Türkiye, was arrested this Wednesday in Istanbul. His arrest is part of an extensive tax investigation into the trafficking and consumption of narcotics that has reached prominent figures in Turkish entertainment and media, as confirmed by state press agencies.
The detainee, Sadettin Saran, who has Turkish and American citizenship, was arrested a few hours after a forensic laboratory reported the presence of traces of narcotics in samples of his hair, according to information broadcast by public television TRT.
The legal process and the statements of the person involved
Saran, born in Denver and elected to lead the club in September, had been summoned to testify last week. As part of the procedure, he was referred to a forensic medical institution for the extraction of hair and blood samples. The investigation, supervised by the Istanbul General Prosecutor’s Office, has resulted in the arrest of more than a dozen people since the beginning of December, including presenters, journalists, singers, actors and digital influencers. The charges range from the production and marketing of drugs to the facilitation of prostitution, with toxicological tests having been carried out on many of those investigated.
The sports leader was interrogated on specific suspicion of supplying and facilitating the consumption of illicit substances. After his arrest, Saran issued a statement categorically rejecting the results of the forensic examination, stating that he has never consumed the substance detected and announcing his intention to formally request a counter-examination and a new analysis.
Institutional reaction and impact on the club
Faced with the crisis, the Fenerbahçe board rushed to issue a message of public support for its president. Through its official account on the X social network (formerly Twitter), the club assured its massive fans that the entity’s daily operations would continue normally, without interruptions. “We have full confidence that our president will overcome this process with the same common sense and strength that he has always shown,” the statement read, adding that Saran “will put these days behind him and continue to work with determination for our club.”
This is not the first time that the leadership of the Istanbul giant has been involved in a judicial scandal. Former president Aziz Yıldırım served more than a year in prison in 2012 on accusations of match-fixing, later being acquitted when a new trial determined that the original case was tainted by the intervention of corrupt judges, prosecutors and police. In parallel, the club remains linked to a separate investigation into illegal betting and manipulation of results in Turkish football.
Based in the Asian part of Istanbul, Fenerbahçe Sports Club is a multi-sports conglomerate with enormous social and economic influence. In addition to its historic soccer team, the entity has high-level sections in basketball, volleyball, athletics, swimming and other disciplines, consolidating its status as a fundamental franchise in national sports. The arrest of its highest representative introduces a factor of institutional and reputational uncertainty, at a time when Turkish justice seems to intensify its fight against narcotics networks in high-profile circles.
