The cold front 30 did not come to play
OAXACA. Two overturned trailers, dozens of communities in darkness and classes suspended. That is just the appetizer of the disaster that cold front number 30 left behind as it passed through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. An annual reminder that nature does not read official statements.
Winds that tear everything away
Authorities say the gusts from the ‘northern’ reached 120 kilometers per hour. Imagine that: hurricane-force winds that knock down whatever they find. In sections like La Ventosa-Santo Domingo Ingenio, it was pure brute force.
The worst thing is that there were warnings. Restrictions for trailers with empty boxes in La Ventosa-La Venta. But some drivers decided the rules were for others. Two learned the hard way – their heavy units ended up belly up.
Massive blackout and urgent measures
Since dawn, towns of Juchitán, Asunción Ixtaltepec, San Miguel Chimalapa and neighborhoods of Tehuantepec and Salina Cruz were left without power. The cables could not withstand the onslaught.
Civil protection asked the CFE to “cut off” the electricity to prevent the burning of grasslands.
Translation: better a controlled blackout than a forest fire. Sometimes the least bad solutions are the only ones available.
Classes suspended and fishing prohibited
In La Ventosa and San Dionisio del Mar, basic level classes were suspended. Broken wires, falling branches – too much risk for children. Elementary common sense, even if it comes late.
For the second consecutive day, they maintain the total ban on fishing with smaller vessels. Waves of up to six meters in the Gulf of Tehuantepec are no game. Here the port authority is being prudent.
Meanwhile, the communities wait for the light to return and for the winds to reduce their intensity. Another cold front, same problems again. Institutional memory seems more fragile than high tension cables.
