The double discourse of ‘fortress’
Marcelo Ebrard appeared today handing out congratulations as if they were candy. First, for the capture of a drug trafficker who, according to him, “shows that the law is being enforced in our country.” Then, due to the reduction of US tariffs on fentanyl. Curious how one celebrates paying less for what one theoretically fights.
“It is an honor to be in her government and we are very proud of her,” he said, referring to Claudia Sheinbaum, after requesting a minute of silence for the fallen soldiers.
The equation is classic: deaths that become a political argument, operations that are sold as “a sign of the State’s strength”. Meanwhile, Ebrard assures that his colleagues in the United States “made their recognition and congratulations known to the President.” Congratulations for what exactly?
The numbers that don’t add up
Here comes the juicy part. On the 15% tariffs imposed by Washington:
“We were paying 25%. In other words, what does not comply with the treaty is lowered to 15%… we paid less today than last Friday. It went well for us.”.
Translation: celebrate paying taxes on illegal substances as if it were a commercial triumph. “We are the country that exports the most and the one that pays the least tariffs,” he concluded. Brilliant logic.
The Secretary of Economy packaged military deaths, media captures and commercial concessions on synthetic drugs in a single speech. All seasoned with that official optimism that smacks of mass distraction.
While asking for silence for some, he celebrates agreements on what kills thousands. Coherence is conspicuous by its absence.
