The great test: Mexico will activate its most ambitious emergency network
Next May 6, at 11 o’clock in the morning, the entire country will pause. It will not be for a political speech or an official celebration. It will be for something much more vital: testing our defense system against earthquakes.
The federal government just announced the First National Drill 2026, and this time it comes with a technological move that could change the rules of the game. We are talking about the official debut of Cell Broadcast technology.
“It will allow massive seismic alerts to be sent to more than 80 million cell phones without the need for an internet connection,” the authorities explained.
Here’s the revolutionary thing: this system does not saturate like traditional SMS. It reaches all devices in a given area, as if it were a radio signal. And most importantly – the message will clearly say that it is just a drill, to avoid unnecessary panic.
But it’s not just new technology. The operation will include more than 14 thousand speakers in states such as Mexico City, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla. It is like activating a national public address system that crosses mountains and reaches the most remote corners.
How to join this general rehearsal?
The calls are now open. The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection is calling on public and private institutions and all citizens to register their properties. The goal? Practice evacuation protocols with real data that will later improve the response.
Registration is free and is done online. You only need basic information about the place and designate a person in charge. You have until May 5 to formally sign up.
Here’s a crucial detail: even if you don’t register, you’ll still be able to participate when the alarm goes off. The difference is that your building or house will not be part of the official national evaluation.
This drill coincides with the 40th anniversary of the National Civil Protection System. Four decades after the ’85 earthquake, we continue to learn that in this shifting country, preparation is not optional – it is survival.
Politics is often about distant promises. But this is different: they are concrete actions that could save lives when we least expect it. And that, friends, is politics applied where it really matters.
