This morning a new heavy fuel oil spill was detected in the “El Chayno” field, in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. It is the seventh incident of this type in neighborhoods near the “Antonio Dovalí Jaime” refinery.
Civil Protection and Pemex personnel cordoned off the area. Specialized equipment began work to contain and recover the fuel to avoid damage to the ground. The coordinator of Civil Protection of Oaxaca, Manuel Maza Sánchez, explained that the fuel does not represent a risk of poisoning or direct danger to the population, although it generates an intense odor.
“Monitoring work will continue until the leak is addressed and confirmed that there is no danger to the inhabitants of the area,” he declared at a press conference.
Neighbors reported the spill around 6:00 a.m. due to the strong smell of hydrocarbons. The authorities maintain surveillance to avoid new incidents and mitigate environmental effects.
