Woman Found Lifeless in Salina Cruz Police Facility
The municipal government of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, issued an official statement confirming the death of a woman inside the cells of the local police headquarters. The municipal authorities indicated that, immediately, all the corresponding investigation protocols were activated to clarify the events that occurred and determine the precise causes of the death.
According to information collected unofficially, the deceased was identified as Andrea Tamara B. A., approximately 30 years old. His lifeless body was located inside one of the holding cells, in circumstances that are being investigated by the ministerial authorities. So far, the police station has not provided official information about the reasons for her deprivation of liberty or the exact place where she was detained.
Ministerial Investigation and Immediate Reactions
Expert personnel from the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office appeared at the scene shortly after one in the afternoon on Saturday, September 13, 2025. Specialists in forensic sciences remained carrying out the inspection and collection of evidence until approximately four in the afternoon. While these proceedings were taking place, some of the victim’s relatives were outside the headquarters, showing obvious confusion and distress due to the lack of official information.
In its public position, the Salina Cruz city council committed to being a contributor to the investigations with the competent authorities, with the primary objective of determining the causes of death and, where appropriate, defining any responsibility in accordance with the established legal frameworks. The municipal authorities reiterated their commitment to legality and respect for human rights, promising to transparently follow up on the investigation and inform citizens in a timely manner.
Worrying Background and Call for Prudence
This unfortunate event evokes a tragic precedent that occurred in the same police station. On August 19, 2022, citizen Abigaíl Hay Urrutia was found dead in those facilities. Although the official investigations at that time determined that it was a suicide, the victim’s family has consistently maintained that he was the victim of a homicide, repeatedly condemning the impunity and absence of justice in his case, especially during the commemoration of the third anniversary of his death.
With the discovery of Andrea Tamara’s body, two women have died within the Salina Cruz police station during the current municipal administration, chaired by Daniel Méndez Sosa. Given the seriousness of the events, the local administration emphatically called on citizens and the media to refrain from disseminating unconfirmed information or speculation that could hinder the investigation process.
Actions of the Prosecutor’s Office and Police Statements
The Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office officially reported that it has initiated the corresponding ministerial investigations, which are being carried out with a mandatory gender perspective. Likewise, all the necessary expert work in forensic science is being carried out to precisely establish the causes and manner of death.
As an immediate part of these proceedings, at least ten members of the Salina Cruz municipal police who were on duty during the period in which the events occurred were transferred to the offices of the Istmo Regional Vice Prosecutor’s Office. The objective is for them to submit their initial ministerial statement as a fundamental part of the process to integrate the research portfolio. This procedure is standard in cases of deaths that occur in state custody.
This case once again puts under public scrutiny the custody protocols and surveillance in preventive detention cells, as well as the obligation of the State to guarantee the integrity and life of the people who are in its custody, regardless of the legal situation in which they find themselves. Transparency and speed in the investigation are crucial to delivering justice and preventing similar events in the future.
