Coppel’s unauthorized pyrotechnic show in Las Choapas
Because nothing says “unmissable offers” like llamas that take everything away. A spectacular, and surely very well lit, fire in a Coppel store in southern Veracruz decided to offer a 100% discount on the physical integrity of five people, leaving them injured. One of them, with the most exclusive promotion of all: burns on 90% of your body. What a bargain, right?
The incident, which of course was not in the week’s brochure, took place in the central area of the municipality of Las Choapas. The establishment, normally dedicated to selling appliances and furniture, was converted in a matter of minutes into a tourist attraction of smoke and screams, generating panic among the population which, let’s be honest, is much more exciting than any liquidation.
The authorities’ response: Protocol or pure theater?
The strong flames and columns of smoke were so effective in summoning people that they achieved a mobilization of police and rescue forces that surely exceeds the one that was set up in Buen Fin. The state authorities, always so punctual with the data, reported the balance of five injured. The star of the show, a person with burns on almost his entire body, was rewarded with an express transfer from the Community Hospital to the Coatzacoalcos Regional Hospital. Because when life hangs by a thread, nothing better than a good ambulance ride.
Three more lucky people were admitted to the Las Choapas Community Hospital to enjoy a free vacation under medical observation. A fifth participant in this drama, perhaps the most sensible of all, after receiving his minimum dose of attention, looked around and said “I better go to Villahermosa.” And so he did, voluntarily leaving the scene of the event to continue his recovery away from this absurd spectacle.
Meanwhile, the State Government, in a display of originality, assured that it maintains direct support for families. A phrase as comforting and vague as “your calls are very important to us.” They promised to ensure coverage of all medical needs, which, translated from bureaucratic to Spanish, probably means that they will wish them a speedy recovery… very strongly.
And as in any good tragedy worth its salt, the authorities continue with the corresponding investigations into the causes. We’re betting the cause was “a fire,” but hey, that’s just a bold theory. Short circuit? Lack of maintenance? A failed experiment to create the next “Eau de Quemado” fragrance for the new perfumery line? The world may never know.
In short, another normal day in which a commercial space transforms into a nightmare, leaving in its wake a trail of unanswered questions, altered lives and the uncomfortable feeling that, sometimes, the greatest danger is not on the street, but in the place where you are going to buy an iron on installments.
