A Night of Chaos and Absurdities on the Yucatecan Asphalt
Because nothing says “welcome to the weekend” like an apocalyptic crash that turns a highway into a horror movie set. Fifteen people, who probably only thought about getting home or to work, met their end in a spectacle of absurdity and twisted metal on the Mérida-Campeche highway. Tragedy, as usually happens, does not warn, but one cannot help but wonder if fate has a macabre sense of humor when organizing such a vehicular mess.
The cast of this tragicomedy included a group full of bricklayers, a trailer presumably loaded with beer (because, of course, irony loves company) and a private car that, I suppose, just wanted to go unnoticed. The result was a collision so brutal that it left authorities scratching their heads and residents with more questions than answers. The causes? Oh please, as if the prosecution is going to solve this before the next meme goes viral. But hey, at least they opened a research folder. Phew, what a relief!
The Macabre Spectacle and the Bureaucracy of Death
Imagine the scene: bodies scattered on the pavement, as if someone had played dice with human lives. The poor motorists passing by, perhaps listening to music or planning their next dinner outing, became extras in a movie that no one wanted to see. They notified emergencies and provided support, because in this country citizen solidarity always ends up doing the work that institutions should do… but with more heart and less budget.
The National Guard and the SSP arrived, because when an area has to be cordoned off, they are the masters of orange tape. The Public Ministry, for its part, was in charge of lifting the bodies and taking them to SEMEFO, where they now wait to be identified as if they were pieces of a morbid puzzle. Meanwhile, the families of the victims rush from hospital to hospital, searching for answers in a system that seems slower than a trailer uphill. And the authorities? Tonight they had not confirmed either the causes of the accident or the identity of the deceased. Wow, what a surprise.
The State Attorney General’s Office, in a burst of proactivity, opened an investigation file to delineate responsibilities. Translation: Let’s see who was to blame and how long we can drag out the process before the press forgets about it. Because, let’s be honest, in this country road investigations have the same speed as rush hour traffic. Of course, the accident had an impact on the residents of the region, because nothing unites a community more than an avoidable tragedy that could have been caused by speeding, mechanical failures or simple bad luck.
And while all this is happening, the trailer with brewery logos is still there, like a grotesque reminder that sometimes life gives you lemons, and other times you crash into a beer truck. Ironic, right? Because if there is anything one could need after such a disaster, it would be precisely a beer. But yes, without overdoing it behind the wheel, because we can already see how the party ends.
So here we are, facing another news that reminds us how fragile everything is, how absurdly bad things can go in a second, and how little it seems to matter until it hits us up close. But hey, at least social media will be abuzz with opinions and speculation… because real drama always needs a good Greek chorus.
