The black stain that no one wants to clean
The Citizen Movement Party has just filed a formal file with the ASEA. The reason: that hydrocarbon spill that is painting the beaches of southern Veracruz black. They describe it as “serious”, of course, because when oil drowns turtles and ruins fishing, it can hardly be anything else.
Luis Carbonell, state coordinator of the party, was direct: > he demanded that those responsible be identified and strong sanctions be applied.
But here comes the interesting thing. They are not satisfied with stopping the leak. They demand a real repair plan. Urgent technical inspections to see the mortality of protected fauna. Full transparency with communities who see their livelihood become a sticky stain.
The convenient chronology
The spill was first reported by fishermen and local authorities on March 2. They returned with their nets and boats full of crude oil. Greenpeace documented damage in 16 coastal places, from Pajapan, Veracruz, to Paraíso, Tabasco.
Now comes the “could have been” part. Governor Rocío Nahle suggests that the leak could have come from a private oil ship doing maneuvers in Tabasco. Pemex, for its part, notifies that this possibility is being investigated.
Meanwhile, the turtles continue swimming among chapapote and the fishermen watch as their season is ruined. Political complaints arrive, investigations “begin”, and the sea continues to receive its daily dose of institutional hypocrisy.
