The cameo that no one asked for but we all needed
Twenty years later, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ continues to pass judgment. And now, in the middle of Stephen Colbert’s show, Meryl Streep once again put on Miranda Priestly’s sunglasses (and icy gaze).
But this time, instead of judging a cerulean blue sweater, he had to evaluate… a pair of red Crocs. Yes, you read that right.
“Crocs? For spring? Groundbreaking”
That was Colbert’s tweet that set everything off. A perfect line, stolen from the original script and adapted to humiliate gardening footwear with supreme class. The scene is a masterpiece of referential humor.
She sits down, unperturbed. He stands there, wearing a cowboy suit and those shoes that provoke laughter and terror in equal parts. The recreation is so exact that it hurts… from laughter.
The cool thing is how this shows that certain scenes are already part of the collective cultural DNA. You don’t need to explain who Miranda Priestly is. Their disdain is a universal language.
And Meryl, at 76 years old, still has that hypnotic power. Just one glance over your glasses can make you feel like your entire outfit is an existential mistake.
As the hype for the sequel grows, this sketch reminds us why the original worked: it mixes fashion, power and a healthy dose of absurdity. Sometimes the most groundbreaking thing isn’t a new dress, but a pair of Crocs in the wrong hands (or feet).
