Britney pleads guilty: the agreement that saved her skin
Britney Spears took a deep breath yesterday, although not in person. Her lawyer did the dirty work: pleading guilty to a lesser charge so that the Princess of Pop doesn’t end up behind bars. All because of that March scare in Southern California, where she was caught driving under the influence of alcohol and substances.
The 44-year-old did not appear in Ventura County court. His legal representative, Michael A. Goldstein, accepted what they call a “wet reckless” – basically, a free pass with conditions: a year of probation, a course on not driving drunk and the legal fines. No jail.
“The plea offer was standard for defendants with no prior convictions,” the district attorney’s office said. No crash, no injuries, low blood alcohol level. And Britney had already shown good faith by voluntarily entering a treatment center in April.
The media show in Ventura
The audience was a circus, but not the one in which she stars on stage. The media swarmed Ventura, northwest of Los Angeles, waiting to see her. But there was no show: a minor charge, no obligation to appear.
The singer has a house in those directions, near where she was arrested on March 4. At the time, his team called his actions “inexcusable” and hoped the arrest would be a wake-up call. Since she was formally accused, total silence.
Authorities said he had alcohol and drugs in his system, but never specified which ones or the exact level of alcohol. Mystery that remains floating, like those songs that we do not let go.
