A health turn for a convicted former president
The DF Star Hospital in Brasilia confirmed this Friday that Jair Bolsonaro suffers from bronchopneumonia and is in the intensive care unit. Receives intravenous antibiotics and clinical support.
Hours earlier, his eldest son, Flávio, had announced on social networks the transfer of the former president from prison to the medical center. “I ask for prayers that it is nothing serious,” wrote the presidential candidate.
“The patient is currently admitted to the intensive care unit, receiving intravenous antibiotics and non-invasive clinical support,” the hospital said.
The symptoms that led to admission were high fever, low oxygen level, sweating and chills. Tests point to pneumonia probably caused by aspiration.
A medical history marked by politics
Bolsonaro, 70, is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting to suppress the democratic system following his 2022 election defeat. His health has been poor since he was stabbed at a campaign rally in 2018.
In January he was escorted to the same hospital for brain tests after a fall. Now, this new respiratory complication occurs while his son Flávio appears almost tied with Lula in the polls for the next elections.
The former president’s conviction includes charges of leading an armed criminal organization and planning violent actions against state figures. He has always denied any wrongdoing.
While the antibiotics take effect in the ICU, the judicial shadow and the family electoral race continue their course.
