The largest university in Mexico takes a position
UNAM does not usually talk about foreign policy. But today he broke the silence. In a forceful statement, the National Autonomous University of Mexico expressed its “solidarity with the people of Cuba” in the face of what it described as a “humanitarian crisis.”
And he pointed directly to a person responsible: the US blockade.
“As a result of the blockade imposed by the United States for more than six decades,” says the official text published on March 8. For the Maximum House of Studies, these measures have worsened the serious energy crisis suffered by the island.
The message is clear: sanctions are hitting ordinary people. “The situation seriously affects the civilian population,” says the university, condemning any obstacle to international aid.
A position that goes beyond Cuba
But UNAM did not stop there. He also established a position on Venezuela. After the recent military events against the government of Nicolás Maduro, the institution trusted that “the full sovereignty of the country without foreign interference” would be restored.
It is a frontal rejection of any intervention.
“We firmly reject the use of force in Latin America and the Caribbean, all forms of intervention and the violation of Public International Law,” the statement guaranteed.
In the end, the call was broad: respect for sovereignty, self-determination of peoples and peaceful resolution of conflicts. UNAM, as a public educational institution, argues that the right to education cannot be guaranteed when the social fabric of a country is suffocated.
A strong positioning that connects two Latin American crises under the same principle: opposition to external pressures. The Mexican university has just hit the regional geopolitical table.
