Two active meteorological phenomena in the Mexican Pacific
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) confirmed this Sunday the formation of tropical storm Cosme off the coast of Michoacán, adding to the already active tropical storm Bárbara, which is expected to become a hurricane in the coming hours. This development marks a scenario of double cyclonic activity in the region.
Technical details of Tropical Storm Cosme
The system evolved from Tropical Depression Three-E around 3:00 p.m. (central Mexico time), being located 935 km southwest of Playa Pérula, Jalisco, and 1,075 km south of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. According to the SMN, its current parameters include:
- Maximum sustained winds: 75 km/h
- Gusts: Up to 95 km/h
- Direction of travel: Northwest at 13 km/h
The organization emphasized that, due to its distance, this phenomenon does not represent a direct risk to the national territory, although its evolution will be continuously monitored.
Tropical Storm Barbara: trajectory and impacts
Meanwhile, Bárbara was located 265 km south-southwest of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, with more intense characteristics:
- Sustained winds: 95 km/h (threshold close to category 1 hurricane)
- Upper gusts: 110 km/h
- Displacement: West-northwest at 19 km/h
Its cloud bands generate intense rains (up to 75 mm), winds of 60 km/h and dangerous waves of 5 meters in Colima, Michoacán and Guerrero. These conditions require caution in maritime activities and vulnerable coastal areas.
Technical analysis and climate context
The coexistence of two tropical systems reflects atmospheric patterns typical of the hurricane season in the Pacific, where warm ocean temperatures (above 26°C) favor their development. Unlike Cosme, Bárbara interacts with direction currents that could increase its power, according to SMN numerical models.
Experts point out that, although Cosme is moving away from Mexico, its route could affect international shipping routes. Instead, Barbara requires attention due to its rapid strengthening potential, an increasingly frequent phenomenon due to climate change.
