Mexico receives a double gift from nature: storms named after grandparents!
Because nothing says “welcome to summer” like two tropical storms forming at the same time off the coast of Mexico. Flossie and Barry, names that sound more suitable for a retired couple in Miami than for meteorological phenomena, decided to team up to remind us that nature has a peculiar sense of humor.
Flossie: the granny who comes strong
The National Water Commission (Conagua) announced that Flossie went from being a simple tropical depression (did anyone warn you that we are no longer in 2020?) to a storm with winds of 65 km/h. Heck, even a professional cyclist beats him! But don’t underestimate this lady: it is expected that it will become a hurricane on Monday or Tuesday, because of course, what better way to start the week?
Flossie’s outer gangs are already distributing rain as if they were propaganda leaflets in Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. Who needs sun when you can have floods, landslides and overflowing rivers? Nature, generous as always.
Barry: the grandfather who runs out of energy
Meanwhile, in the Gulf of Mexico, Barry is advancing at the same speed as Flossie (65 km/h), but with less ambition. Forecasts indicate it will weaken before becoming a hurricane, making it the least motivated participant of this storm season. Of course, don’t get too confident: from Boca de Catán to Tecolutla, Veracruz, there are already alerts for heavy rains. Because what would Mexico be without a little climate chaos?
The authorities, in their eternal optimism, exhort (that word they use when they really want to say “listen to us, please”) the population to be attentive to the warnings of the National Meteorological Service and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection. Just in case, you know: put away the garden furniture, don’t go out to take selfies with the waves and, above all, don’t blame the rulers. This time, the joke is about nature.
